KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — Parliament today approved an emergency motion to debate the discovery of mass graves found and human trafficking camps in Perlis this month.

The motion was tabled by Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung and approved by Deputy Speaker Datuk Ismail Mohamed Said, who said it satisfied all three requirements set by the House.

“The mass graves issue... how can it happen without the knowledge of the government all these while?

“This matter involves about 139 graves and 28 human trafficking camps found in Malaysia and this is a matter of public interest as it demonstrates the government’s failure in managing the country’s borders, which saw the deaths of hundreds of people,” Gooi said when interjecting in the parliamentary debate session earlier to table his motion.

Ismail allocated one hour, from 4.30pm till 5.30pm, for debates on the issue.

Last week, police discovered 30 mass graves in Perlis believed to contain hundreds of Rohingya and Bangladeshi corpses, after the Home Ministry denied the existence of human trafficking camps in Malaysia.

On May 25, police discovered another 139 mass graves, each believed to be holding the remains of between three and four Rohingya and Bangladeshis, in 28 abandoned migrant “prison camps” near the Malaysia-Thai border.

Human trafficking activity also put Malaysia on a US watchlist for slavery last year.
