PETALING JAYA, Jan 21 — Events that unfolded yesterday just go to show that age is not a factor when it comes to embarrassing car moments.
Following a Malay Mail report of a 70-year-old man accidentally putting his car in drive instead of reverse and driving straight into a bank’s ATM section on Sunday, the poor gentleman was subjected to a fair amount of ageist comments on social media.
However, not to be upstaged by the septuagenarian, four colleagues cheated death yesterday when the car they were in fell down a 9m ravine in Bangsar South.
Three women and one man, aged between 20 to 30, were in the vehicle when the driver accidentally accelerated and drove the car over the edge.
They had just gotten into the car which was parked near an eatery next to the ravine.
A Pantai Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a distress call was received at 12.46pm.
“When our team of six officers arrived, we found the car in the ravine,” he said.
“The occupants sustained light injuries. They were sent to University Malaya Medical Centre for treatment.”
Brickfields police chief ACP Mohd Azlee Abdullah said the Brickfields patrol team was alerted by the Fire and Rescue Department operations centre.
On Sunday, a retired army officer accidentally drove into a bank instead of reversing out of the parking space.
Petaling Jaya traffic police chief Deputy Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said the elderly man had intended to reverse but put his car in drive mode instead.
Mohamad Roy said no one was in the bank at the time and the ATM was not damaged.
The bank lodged a report on Monday morning and the man was later issued a summon for his undeliberate mistake.
The retiree was not injured and both parties will claim insurance for the repairs.
