KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will only decide if it needs to investigate 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) after it obtains further details from an Umno leader who yesterday lodged a report against the state investor.

The commission’s deputy chief commissioner (Operations) Mohd Shukri Abdull said this was because Umno’s Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan did not furnish any information that was not already contained in his previous police report against 1MDB.

“MACC will be calling Khairuddin to get additional information from him before deciding whether there is basis to investigate under the MACC Act 2009,” Shukri said in a statement reported by news portal Malaysiakini.

The Umno Batu Kawan division chief previously lodged a police report against 1MDB and its subsidiaries, alleging “questionable” business, investment and fund raising transactions and decisions.

It was reported that Khairuddin is backed by “powerful forces” in the party and that he decided to lodge the report following various reports, in both the local and foreign as well as online media agencies, which had allegedly proved the flaws in 1MDB’s management of taxpayers’ money.

Yesterday, he also denied that his attack against 1MDB was personal and to spite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
