PARIS, April 12 ― A former foundry in Paris's 11th arrondissement is site of a brand-new digital art centre that opens this week with an immersive exhibition devoted to Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.
Featuring 140 video projectors and a sound system, the Atelier des Lumières holds 3,300 square meters of multimedia exhibition space, reaching up to 10 meters high, integrating elements from the former iron foundry, such as a chimney, drying tower, pool and water tank, into the immersive experience.
At the venue's opening on April 13, visitors will be immersed in the work of Klimt and Schiele, marking the 100th anniversary of the both painters' deaths. Klimt will be seen through some of his most famous works, including art from his “golden period,” portraits and landscapes.
In a first sequence devoted to Neoclassical Vienna, visitors will be surrounded by the projected walls and ceiling of the city's Kunsthistorisches Museum, with its architecture, decoration, frescoes and neoclassical paintings coming into view.
Subsequent sequences of the exhibition will show visitors the facades of Vienna's buildings, before focusing in on Klimt's use of gold ― projecting the gilded swirls of his famous “Tree of Life” on the Atelier's enormous walls ― and on his vision of nature, with a virtual visit to a forest of aligned tree trunks. Later, the figures of Egon Schiele's paintings will dance along the Atelier's walls.
The show of light and music promises to go beyond the work of two painters to take visitors through 100 years of Viennese painting.
