LOS ANGELES, July 13 — 21st Century Fox have confirmed that Duff Beer, Homer Simpson’s favourite drink, is no longer fiction and will go on sale in Chile this week.
For the company, it’s pretty much a case of “if you can’t beat them, join them”, because illegal copies of Duff Beer have taken the South American country by storm.
The Wall Street Journal quoted president of Fox’s consumer products division, Jeffrey Godsick, as saying, “Once you see enough piracy, you’re faced with two choices. One is deciding to fight it, and the other is deciding to go out [into the market] with it.”
He went on to say that a special recipe has been developed for the beer: “It’s a premium lager. It’s got a very good balance of flavour and refreshment to it. It’s fairly deep golden in colour.
“It’s got a hint of fruit to it. It’s got a caramel aromatic to it.”
While it will not include overt references to the “The Simpsons”, the label will mimic the bottles and cans seen on the show.
Until now, Fox has sold Duff-branded beer at “Simpsons” theme parks only, and not on the commercial market.
Godsick confirmed that the company plans to expand in early 2016 to other parts of South America and Europe.
