KUCHING, Aug 11 ― Sarawak emerged as the overall champion for the 12th consecutive time after collecting 84 gold, 63 silver and 73 bronze medals when the 18th Paralympiad ended here today. 

The highest contributor of gold medals for the Sarawak contingent was swimming which raked in 39 of the 77 gold medals at stake in the competition while athletics contributed 23 gold medals.  

The runner-up of the 18th Paralympiad was Johor with 35 gold, 25 silver and 15 bronze.

The position of the champion and runner-up was a repeat of the 17th Paralympiad hosted by Perlis two years ago while Terengganu were third with 30 gold, 24 silver and 19 bronze medals.

Throughout the five days of competition, two national and 48 paralympiad records were rewritten.

In powerlifting, two national records and two paralympiad records were improved while in swimming, 46 new paralympiad records were set.

A total of 1,407 paralympic athletes with limb disability, sight, mental as well as spastic categories competed in nine sports held at several locations around Kuching and Samarahan. ― Bernama
