KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 — World number one and defending champion Lee Chong Wei strolled into the quarter-finals of the Denmark Open last night after securing an easy 21-11, 21-17 win over Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the second round.

According to the tournament website www.badmintondenmark.com, Chong Wei will next face another Danish shuttler, Jan Jorgensen, the home favourite, who beat India’s Kashyap Parupali, 21-11, 21-15.

Besides Chong Wei, his arch rivals Du Pengyu and second seed Chen Long of China also moved into the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, under fire men’s doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong also made it to the quarter-finals after beating Michael Fuchs-Johannes Schoettler of Germany 21-14, 21-19 in their second round match.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong will meet new South Korean pair Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yeon Seong in the quarter-finals.

But while Chong Wei and the men’s doubles pair were in a joyous mode after their win, there was gloom in the Malaysian camp when another men’s singles hopeful, Chong Wei Feng and mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying, were shown the exit in the second round.

Wei Feng lost to Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, 21-15, 17-21, 17-21 after a three-set thriller while Peng Soon-Liu Ying lost to South Korean pair Kim Ki Jung-Kim So Young, 15-21, 22-20, 18-21, also after a three-set thriller. — Bernama
