KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — “Jwanita” finally comes to cinemas this September, but only after going through some extensive cuts.
Director Osman Ali revealed that he had to cut out about thirty per cent of the movie’s final scenes as advised by the Film Censorship Board (LPF).
“I myself thought that some scenes like the one where Maya (Karin) consumes human meat and cooks the soup that’s later fed to Julaika’s character and her family is a little too much,” said the director as quoted by mStar.
“Hence, the reason why before the movie was edited and sent to LPF, we requested for them to oversee the editing process and took their advice to cut out the cannibalistic scene and several others.”
Osman also revealed that he wrote the script himself based on true events. Aiming for a horror-psycho genre, he took inspiration not from a specific crime but from several crimes that happened previously.
Though the movie only took a month to film, it took three years to finish the whole production, due to the long post-production process that includes time-consuming CGI.
“Jwanita” tells the story of a woman with mental illness, due to being physically and mentally abused by her adoptive parents who are also black magic users.
Actress Maya Karin stars as the titular character, and Osman couldn’t be happier with his choice. “I created the character for Maya when I was writing the script but I did not expect her to give her all to it. Sometimes, she was so immersed in her mentally-ill persona that I even got scared to talk to her on set.”
“Jwanita”, also starring Bront Palarae, Cristina Suzanne and Datin Umie Aida, opens in cinemas on September 24, 2015. — Cinema Online
