HOLLYWOOD, May 13 — A 13-episode adaptation of Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s bestselling “Queen of the South” starring Alice Braga has been acquired by the USA Network for a 2016 debut.
Braga, who co-starred in “Elysium,” “I Am Legend,” and Cannes Palme d’Or nominee “Blindness,” recalls a much earlier role in Brazilian breakout “City of God” with her return to crime drama in “Queen of the South.”
Her character, Teresa Mendoza, escapes to the USA after her boyfriend drug dealer is killed in Mexico, but formulates a plan to return and assume control of the Cartel, reports Deadline.
Pérez-Reverte’s novel had already spawned a film starring Eva Mendes, but that ran into difficulties with plans to film on location in Sinaloa, Mexico; Spanish-language network Telemundo found considerable success with its own 2011 series, “La Reina del Sur.” — AFP/Relaxnews
