LOS ANGELES, July 8 — The computer-animated sequel outsold “World War Z” at worldwide box offices during its second weekend in commercial theaters, bringing in US$171.3 million (RM549 million). “Despicable Me 2” also topped the US charts at US$82.5 million.
At receipts of US$63.4 million, the Brad Pitt zombie flick fell behind but still outgrossed newcomer “The Lone Ranger.” This Western vigilante action-packed picture starring Armie Hammer as the masked righter of wrongs and Johnny Depp as his Native American sidekick Tonto raked in US$53.7 million in its first weekend on the silver screen.
That consigns “Monsters University” to fourth place at US$49 million, ahead of “Man of Steel” with a US$32.7 million showing last weekend. — AFP/Relaxnews
