KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 ― Bursa Malaysia declined at mid-afternoon today, dragged down by losses in selected blue-chips.

At 3.05pm, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) stood at 1,694.73, down 5.16 points against yesterday's close of 1,699.89 points. It opened 4.32 points easier at 1,695.57 at 9 am.

Losers outpaced gainers by 490 to 279, with 345 counters unchanged, 566 untraded and 19 others were suspended.

Turnover was high at 2.06 billion shares worth RM1.05 billion.    

Among the top losers were British American Tobacco, down RM1.06 to RM50.94, United U-Li eased 60 sen to RM5.30 and Oriental Holdings fell 30 sen to RM7.10.

Of the top gainers, United Plantations surged 30 sen to RM27.30, Panasonic Manufacturing rose 20 sen to RM38.20 and Power Root was 14 sen higher at RM2.14.

Among heavyweights, Public Bank inched up four sen to RM19.84 and IHH gained a sen to RM6.69. Maybank eased four sen to RM8.01. TNB was flat at RM14.80.

On actives, AirAsia X added six sen to 46.5 sen, Borneo Oil gained a sen to 19 sen and Dagang Nexchange increased 1.5 sen to 24 sen.

The FBM Emas Index lost 36.9 points to 11,893.70, FBMT100 Index was 32.12 points lower at 11,590.22 and the FBM Ace decreased 7.8 points to 5,578.42.

The FBM 70 was 26.28 per cent weaker at 13,650.88 and the FBM Emas Shariah Index lost 47.96 points to 12,544.6.

Sector-wise, the Finance Index inched down 52.04 points to 14,525.25, Plantation Index lost 8.14 points to 7,729.31 and the Industrial Index gave up 18.65 points to 3,198.82. ― Bernama
