MALACCA, Nov 26 — Cooperatives in the country have been urged to seize the opportunities made available by the establishment of the Asean Community by forging business networks with their counterparts in Asean member nations.
Making the call, Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Bhd (Angkasa) President Datuk Abdul Fattah Abdullah said of Asean’s 600 million people, about 10 per cent are members of cooperatives, of which there are 230,000.
He was speaking to reporters after the launch of a carnival featuring the products and services of the country’s cooperatives here today.
Four memoranda of understanding on business collaboration were signed at the event — between Angkasa and Koperasi Samakaya DT Bhd of Brunei; between Angkasa and Aeon Big (M) Sdn Bhd; between MyAngkasa Holding Sdn Bhd and Petronas Dagangan Bhd; and between Koperasi Darul Aman Bhd and Koperasi DBKL Bhd.
On November 22, Asean leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, signed a declaration on the establishment of the Asean Community by December 31. — Bernama
