IPOH, Jan 8 — Malaysia today recorded 3,251 new Covid-19 cases as the country’s daily infections remained over the 3,000 mark for fourth consecutive day.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this brings the total cumulative number of Covid-19 cases nationwide now to 2,783,331.
“Out of the 3,251 cases, 2,952 cases were reported locally which involved 2,837 Malaysian and 115 foreigners,” he said in a statement this evening.
Dr Noor Hisham said 243 cases required treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“Of the 243 cases, 211 patients have been confirmed with Covid-19 while the remaining 32 cases are suspected, possible or still under investigation for Covid-19 infection,” he said.
“113 patients required respiratory support with 77 confirmed Covid-19 cases while the remaining are suspected, possible or still under investigation for Covid-19,” he added.
He added that from the 3,251 cases reported today, 58 cases are in Category 3, 4, and 5 while 3,193 case are under Category 1 and 2.
Dr Noor Hisham added that Malaysia’s Covid-19 infectivity rate is currently at 0.96.
“Labuan and Sabah topped the list among the states by recording R0 value of 1.15 and 1.06 respectively while Sarawak recorded the lowest with 0.86,” he said.
He said two new Covid-19 clusters were discovered in the last 24 hours bringing the total active clusters to 176.
On daily Covid-19 recovery, Malaysia reported 3,161 cases today, bringing the total cumulative number of recoveries in the country to 2,711,900 or 97.4 per cent.
As for flood mitigation efforts Dr Noor Hisham said there are 58 temporary relief centres (PPS) operating in three states (Pahang, Melaka and Johor).
“One new Covid-19 cases was reported among the flood victims. However, no new clusters were reported in any of the PPS,” he said.
Apart from that, the ministry found 35 cases of acute respiratory infections, one individual with skin disease and seven cases of acute gastroenteritis.
