KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 ― The Shariah Lawyers Association of Malaysia (PGSM) urged Putrajaya today to strengthen the judiciary and Islamic jurisprudence systems in the country.
Utusan Malaysia reported PGSM president Musa Awang as saying that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government should restore the people’s trust in the judiciary, including Shariah law practice.
“PGSM hopes this new change promises the best for Malaysia, by strengthening the judiciary and Islamic law,” he reportedly said.
One of PH’s 60 promises in its manifesto was to “restore public trust in the judicial and legal institutions”.
The group also hoped that Shariah lawyers will receive the same recognition as civil lawyers.
It also called for a Shariah Judiciary Commission be formed to ensure integrity in the sector, and also so that the remuneration of the judges would be proportionate with their professionalism.
