SEPANG, May 2 — Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) today to step up enforcement against parking infractions at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

MAHB managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said the move was part of the firm’s efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow at the airport, which is, at times, hindered by indiscriminate and illegal parking within its vicinity.

Under the agreement, MAHB will provide a vehicle storage depot where the police can place impounded vehicles and operate reclamation facilities.

“Although we will take decisive action on traffic offenders, we will also ensure that this process runs smoothly.

“With this vehicle storage depot, it will not only simplify the police’s duty to keep the vehicles on hold, but it will also allow owners to claim their vehicles,” he said in a statement.

Selangor Police Chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor said the MoU’s validity was three years.

“We will constantly monitor the KLIA and KLIA2 airports for stubborn drivers who refuse to abide by the law,” he said.

MAHB said recent research had found that drivers still flouted parking regulations around both airports, including by parking on road shoulders in the ingress and egress zones to the airports.

Earlier this year, the airport operator also extended 30 minutes of free parking at its Long-Term Parking Area to encourage drivers to wait there without being a nuisance to other motorists.
