KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 —  Over 800 students from technical and vocational streams have shown an interest in pursuing entrepreneurship as a career by participating in Companies Commission of Malaysia’s (SSM) inaugural Student Entrepreneurship Programme (1st STEP).

In a statement yesterday, SSM said apart from fostering interest in entrepreneurship, the programme is also meant to educate students on its roles and functions as a statutory body.

Yesterday, Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin launched the programme, adding that it is beneficial to students who aim to succeed in the entrepreneurial field.

“This programme will not only provide students with the opportunity to learn about the financing facilities available in the country to start a business, but it will also provide necessary trainings to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to become a viable and competitive entrepreneurs,” he said in a statement.

He said SSM is working together with Technical and Vocational Education Department under the Education Ministry where they had identified 81 institutions which are suited for the programme.

This year, however, the first of the 1st STEP series will only see SSM conducting the programme at 10 schools — seven Kolej Vokasional and three Sekolah Menengah Teknik.

The 2018 series will go on until November.
