SUBANG JAYA, Feb 6 — The Inland Revenue Board told the public today not to be concerned by the agency’s ongoing pursuit of businesses for non-compliance, saying it was only ensuring a “level playing field”.

Deputy director-general (compliance) Abdul Manap Dim also said the apparent crackdown was within the IRB’s legal powers and not aggressive or abusive.

“Our aim is to ensure that there is a level playing field for all taxpayers by creating a fair and transparent tax system,” he said at keynote address of the IRB-Malaysia Employers Federation (MEF) Seminar 2018 today.

He said the IRB will this year focus of individuals and firms engaged in tax evasion.

“We view this ploy seriously as it erodes the country’s tax revenue and sends a negative signal to potential investors into the country,” he added.

He later reminded employers to ensure their workers’ tax matters were handled diligently, to avoid conflicts in later declarations.

According to IRB data, it collected an additional RM1.79 billion in monthly tax deductions for the entirety of 2017, or an 8.4 per cent increase over 2016.
