PETALING JAYA, Feb 1 — Police clarified today that a photograph distributed online and depicting two cars resembling patrol vehicles adorned with Chinese characters were used in the making of a movie.
Addressing allegations that the vehicles indicated Malaysia’s preferential treatment of China, Bukit Aman corporate communications chief SAC Datuk Asmawati Ahmad said they were not regular issue cars for her agency.
“The cars were part of the filming for the movie The Original Sin which had scenes shot in areas around Putrajaya.
“It is part of a movie that depicts the life of a police officer carrying out his duties in a fictitious town called Han City,” she said.
The movie is intended for China.
A Facebook post on a page named "Mahathir the Legend" uploaded the photo of the two prop vehicles, along with insinuation of subservience to China.
Asmawati cautioned social media users to be wary when sharing information to avoid spreading malicious material.
“We take such claims posted on Facebook very seriously, because the intention to trigger a negative perception towards government agencies is very clear,” she said.
The offending post has been shared 320 times and attracted more than 250 comments.
* A previous version of the report erroneously reported the movie title as Sin City. The report has been amended to reflect the correct title.
