PUTRAJAYA, Jan 17 — Women will play an ever great role in the country’s development and must consequently be given every opportunity to take part in the economy, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri  Najib Razak.

Speaking at the launch of “Women’s Empowerment Year 2018” (TMW18) logo at the Prime Minister’s Office here, Najib also said his administration has delivered on the promise for greater gender equality in Malaysia.

“Our record in terms of raising women as a force to drive the country’s growth is unquestionable.

“But we are not satisfied, we can do more and we can do better,” he said.

Najib said that with globalisation today, the role women play in economic development was increasingly vital.

“Countries that had previously not been concerned with the empowerment of women are playing catch up to increase their economic output.

“But we ourselves have already taken steps to prepare for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and have already implemented programmes which will see women play a greater role in economic activity in greater numbers and in a more equitable manner,” he said.

As part of the campaign, three prominent women were identified as inspiration for others of their gender.

These were businesswoman Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor; e-commerce entrepreneur and owner of Fashion Valet, Vivy Yusof; and Selangor Princess Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah who known for her social work and activism.

Also present was Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, who said the logo would be a key component of to promote and propel the campaign.

She also called for governments conducting TMW2018 programmes make prominent use of the logo

“As for TMW2018 portal, we will add in various information and activities related to women development.

“This will become a reference for various parties including non-governmental organisations to learn about the successful stories of women in the country,” she added.

The logo depicts several crescents and a flowing outer design, with the colour “Midnight Blue” chosen as a reflection of women’s serenity and strength, Rohani explained.
