KOTA BARU, Jan 10 — Two policemen were sentenced to 11 and 13 years’ jail respectively by the Kota Baru Sessions Court here today after they were found guilty of committing a gang robbery last year.
Judge Nazri Ismail also sentenced Constable Adri Hazwan Ahmad, 29, to four strokes of the rotan, while Lance Corporal Mohamad Fauzi Ariffin, 27, was given six strokes.
Another accused Mohd Fairuz, 30, a trader and also the elder brother of Mohamad Fauzi, was sentenced to 13 years’ jail and six strokes of the rotan for the same offence.
However, only Adri Hazwan was present in court.
The trio, represented by counsel Zuhaidi Akmal Hasan Basri, were jointly charged with robbing Rahmah Omar, 55, of cash amounting RM3,050 at Lot 589, Kampung Tanjong Badang here, on March 18, 2016 at 11.15pm.
The charge under Section 395 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
In mitigation, Zuhaidi Akmal on behalf of his clients, appealed for a lighter sentence on the grounds that the three were first time offenders.
Deputy public prosecutor Hajarul Falena Abu Bakar, however, urged the court to impose a heavy sentence as two of the accused are members of the police force who should be protecting the public. — Bernama
