KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — An unemployed man pleaded guilty in the High Court here today to supporting the Islamic State (IS) and possession of materials linked to the militant group, last year.
Wan Mohamad Nur Firdaus Abd Wahab, 22, admitted to the two charges after they were read out via an interpreter before Judicial Commissioner Datuk Ab Karim Ab Wahab.
On the first count, he was charged with knowingly giving support to the IS militant group by taking the ‘sumpah setia baiah’ (oath of loyalty) through the Telegram mobile application under the ‘Gagak Hitam’ chat group, using the name of ‘Lat Firdaus’.
Wan Mohamad Nur Firdaus committed the offence at No: 8, Jalan Cili 24/28D, Section 24, Shah Alam, Selangor at 7.32am on March 30 last year.
The charge under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code carries a life imprisonment or not more than 30 years, and forfeiture of property used or intended to be used in connection with the commission of the offence, upon conviction.
On the second count, Wan Mohamad Nur Firdaus was charged with possessing 23 images related to the IS militant group in his Oppo mobile phone at the same place at 8.35am on September 25, 2016.
The charge under Section 130JB (1)(a) carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine and loss of ownership of the materials involved, if found guilty.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Fadzlan Mohd Nor prosecuted while Wan Mohamad Nur Firdaus was unrepresented.
The court fixed June 21 for re-mention and to allow Wan Mohamad Nur Firdaus to engage a lawyer. — Bernama
