KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 — Deputy education minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan said today that he will visit the school where a student was allegedly slapped so hard by a teacher that she had to be hospitalised.

According to local news portal The Star Online, Kamalanathan also urged teachers not to resort to violence when attempting to discipline students.

“Teachers need to be patient towards the pupils. They should find other ways and means to find a solution to solve an issue rather than being violent,” he was quoted as saying.

In Tanah Merah, Kelantan, 15-year-old Nursyahida Zulkifli was struck three times to the back of her head by a teacher who believed that the Form 3 student had purportedly shaved her eyebrows.

The slaps from the teacher resulted in Nursyahida vomiting, after which she had to be warded due to a “nerve problem.”

The student’s mother Zakirah Zahari said that the slaps could have aggravated Nursyahida’s previous injury sustained in a bathroom fall last year.
