KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 ― Youth activist Ali Abdul Jalil said today he has received Swedish permanent residence when his asylum application was accepted, after he fled Malaysia following prosecution under the Sedition Act 1948.

Ali, who fled his home country in October 2014 after he was charged with sedition for allegedly insulting the Johor royalty and Selangor Sultan, as well as for allegedly undermining the royal institution, thanked the Scandinavian country.

“I love Sweden so much,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“If I were evil, Sweden wouldn’t have given me PR..Thank you, mum and dad, my siblings and everyone else who prayed for me..to my haters and critics, thank you for your constructive criticism and ideas,” he added.

Ali was among the 15 anti-government dissidents and opposition politicians who were arrested under the colonial-era Sedition Act in the space of one month.
