SIBU, Jan 10 — Police detained three men to facilitate investigations into the fatal shooting of a businessman at a restaurant in Jalan Long Bridge here, last night.
Sibu police chief ACP Mohd Kamal Kordi said the men were detained around 2.30am in the city but did not specify the exact location the arrests were made.
“No weapons were found,” he said when contacted here today.
Investigations for the motive of the attack which caused the death of the man, in his 30s, and injured his Chinese national girlfriend was ongoing, he said.
He did not rule out the possibility the shooting was due to business rivalry and triad-related territorial dispute.
In the 11.09pm incident, the victim, his girlfriend and a new bodyguard had just finished eating at the restaurant and were about to leave when a white Toyota Hilux suddenly pulled up not far from them and the driver took out a shotgun and opened fire.
After the first shot, the private bodyguard retaliated by taking out his pistol and firing back five shots at the Hilux.
The attacker fired two more shots at the victim before speeding off from the place using Jalan Lanang and opened fire at a junction to pass a red traffic light.
The victim, died at a private hospital here at 12.31am following gunshot wounds to the chest, left shoulder and back. His girlfriend who was hurt on the shoulder and left wrist was taken to Sibu Hospital.
The bodyguard saw three men in the vehicle and believed his shot hit one of them.
