GEORGE TOWN, May 14 — For the past six months, an underground car park at a shopping centre in Bandar Perai Jaya here became a hot-bed for traffickers to carry out what was believed to have been multi-million ringgit drug transactions.

Parking their vehicles at the car park, money changed hands among the traffickers to facilitate delivery of an assortment of drugs to the addict population.

On Tuesday, four suspected drug traffickers arrived at the car park to conduct what they thought would be yet another drug transaction — but instead, they walked straight into a police ambush!

Penang Narcotics CID chief Supt Guan Beng Kang said a police team with the Bukit Aman Narcotics CID arrested two of them who were in a Hyundai Sonata at 5.45pm.

From them, he said the police seized 18kg of ketamine packed in 18 packets and worth about RM720,000, hidden in the car boot.

“In a span of just 10 minutes, two other men were nabbed in their respective cars, not far from where the first two suspects were detained, and they were found to be conducting a separate drug transaction,” he told a press conference here today.

Guan said initial investigations revealed the car boot had been modified and the police were almost tricked as the drugs were hidden inside a speaker box.

“There was a remote control near the speaker which when triggered, opened the compartment containing the drugs.

“We believe the group (of suspected drug traffickers) had been operating for six months and using the underground car park as venue to conduct their activities,” he added.

He said the police seized three cars belonging to the suspects, namely a Nissan Teana, Honda Civic and a Perodua Myvi, as well as jewellery worth RM15,800 and RM10,311.

Guan said the suspects, aged between 24 and 35 were remanded until May 18 to facilitate investigations.

He said the four tested positive for drugs, with one having a criminal record related to drugs. — Bernama
