KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 — Perak DAP lawmaker Nga Kor Ming accused the police today of being “insensitive” for launching their sedition probe on him during the Chinese New Year, and even insisting that he travel from Ipoh to record his statement here.
The Taiping MP, who turned up at the central police headquarters this morning with fellow Perak DAP lawmaker Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham, complained to the media that he had initially requested to record his statement in Ipoh where his family home is.
“To my great dismay I was not allowed to record my statement in Ipoh. Instead, Bukit Aman forced us to travel 250km to come here.
“I deem it highly insensitive during Chinese New Year,” Nga said when met outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters.
“I maintain that I have done nothing wrong and I am always ready to assist the police,” he added before pointing out that he was forced to cancel today’s Chinese New Year events back home.
Nga, who is under investigation for commenting on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy conviction, also accused the police of harassment.
The police, he added, should be more focused on fighting crime instead of launching probes on lawmakers like him.
When met after he had his statement recorded, Nga told reporters that his mobile phone was confiscated by the police after he admitted to tweeting a comment on Anwar’s case on February 10.
“I admitted I wrote the tweet and they took my phone and sim card. There’s no promise when they are going to return but anyone who wants to contact me can call my office,” he said.
“They informed me they will send this to AG (Attorney-General) chambers for further action.”
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar recently ordered his officers to start a sedition investigation on Nga for his tweets on the Federal Court February 10 decision to uphold Anwar’s sodomy conviction and five-year jail sentence handed down by the Court of Appeal.
Nga had allegedly tweeted from his @ngakorming Twitter handle on February 10 that it was time for the public to stand up to a “cruel regime”.
His Pakatan Rakyat ally, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli, will also be making statements at Bukit Aman later this afternoon
Rafizi allegedly posted a picture on Twitter on the same day of a silhouette of what appears to be a person wearing a ceremonial wig similar to the style worn by judges, with dollar signs in each ringlet.
The picture was accompanied with the #RakyatHakimNegara (The people are the country’s judges) hashtag used in the run-up to the apex court verdict on Anwar’s Sodomy II trial.
