KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 ― Police detained three people believed to be suspected jihadists at the KL International Airport yesterday.
According to local daily The Star, the three were an architect, a technician and a shopkeeper, who were about to board a flight to Turkey, where they would have found their way into Syria to join the Islamic State (IS).
They are the latest Malaysians to be detained as suspected jihadists as the country has designated the IS as a “terrorist organisation”.
The Star added that the architect came from Pahang and the technician from Perlis, both aged 26. The 42-year-old sundry shop owner is from Kelantan and is believed to be married with six children.
Yesterday, the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution urging countries to help stop the flow of foreign jihadists to Iraq and Syria.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, who was at the UN Security Council meeting in New York, said Malaysia would strengthen its laws and counter-terrorism capabilities.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar applauded the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division on the arrests.
