SIBU, July 9 — One hundred and thirty-nine traffic offenders who had been issued warrants of arrest for failing to pay their summonses were detained in the ‘Ops Warta Khas’ conducted in Sarawak between June 16 and June 27.
Sarawak Police Commissioner, SDCP Datuk Wira Muhammad Sabtu Osman said the culprits had been released on bail to allow them to settle their dues.
He said 317 operations were carried out to track down the offenders while 14,256 road users were screened.
“We mounted road blocks during the operations this time. Previously we went from house to house to track them,” he told reporters after breaking fast at the Surau Darul Huda at Sibu district police headquarters last night.
He also urged traffic offenders with warrants of arrest to promptly settle their summonses.
He said offenders whose arrest warrants had expired could come to the nearest police station to obtain a new notice.
“They don’t have to be afraid because police will allow them bail,” he assured.
Meanwhile, the state police contingent would carry out ‘Ops Selamat’, a week before Aidilfitri this year to ensure safe journey for those returning to their villages to celebrate the occasion.
“In the operation this year, we will also monitor river and sea transport. We will assign personnel at accident prone areas,” he said.
Sabtu said the state police had sufficient manpower to conduct the operations as only 10 per cent of the workforce would be taking leave during the holidays.
“Here in Sarawak, half of our personnel are from the Iban community,” he said. — Bernama
