KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Petronas says it has taken all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the gas pipeline which caught fire two days ago in the district of Lawas in Sarawak about 135 km from the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal in Kimanis, Sabah.
In a statement to Bernama today, the national oil company said efforts are also in progress to restore the pipeline with the deployment of repair teams to undertake remedial work.
It added that a team comprising representatives from Petronas and other relevant authorities had started investigations on the cause of the fire which occurred around 2am on June 10.
It is also in touch with the communities in the vicinity to update them on the current situation, it said, adding that there have been no reported injuries or casualties and the fire did not affect any of the communities along the pipeline as the closest community is 10km away.
The statement added that the fire was brought under control and finally extinguished by the activation of the pipeline’s automatic safety system, and that the company at all times adhered to stringent safety measures with international standards for all its operations. — Bernama
