KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — The High Court here today increased the fine imposed on the private college student who participated in the anti-National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) rally last April to RM3,000.

Previously, Umar Mohamad Azmi, 24, was convicted and ordered by the magistrate’s court to pay a fine of RM1,000 and to serve a month’s jail.

Judge Kamardin Hashim, after hearing the appeal against the conviction and the sentence on Umar today, however, set aside the jail sentence.

Umar was charged with obstructing Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officer Mohd Masran Mamat, 34, from discharging his duties to arrest a man at Dataran Merdeka, Jalan Raja here.

The offence was committed at 8.05am on April 23.

The charge under section 186 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of two years or a fine not exceeding of RM10,000, or both, if convicted.

Umar was represented by lawyer Syahredzan Johan, while deputy public prosecutor Jean Sharmila prosecuted. — Bernama
