KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — A durian seller in Singapore is giving back to society by distributing free durians to senior citizens.

The giveaway for those 60 years and above began at 8pm on Monday (June 12) and will end on Thursday (June 15) at Yishun, 8 World reported.

A senior citizen, who gave his name as Ang, said food prices had skyrocketed and having three meals a day was a problem.

Hence, having durians was out of the question.

"Therefore, I am very thankful to the seller for giving out free durians," he said.

Another recipient, who gave her name as Jin Hua, said she had stopped eating durians for many years due to its price.

"I love durians but it is simply too expensive," she said.

Stall owner Anthony Gan, who hails from Muar, Johor, said he allocated S$30,000 (RM103,215) for the giveaway and this was his second year giving away durians to senior citizens.

He said although the price of durian this year was more expensive than last year, he still continued to give out the King of Fruits.

Gan said he would give out about 550kg or 800 pieces of durians every night and each senior citizen would get two to three durians worth about S$20 (RM68).

According to Mothership, the variety of durians available are red prawn, gang hai and D13.

The giveaway was also made possible by a wholesaler who sponsor 100kg of durians per day while another long-term customer of Gan was helping out with 50kg per day.
