ONTARIO, April 17 — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today earned his geek cred in the eyes of many when he took an offhand question by a reporter on quantum computing on Friday, in a report by CBC News.
Canada’s youngest prime minister has already earned a legion of fans with his photogenic looks and yoga moves, but Twitter has gone wild after Trudeau showed off his knowledge on the subject.
Trudeau was making a budget announcement of C$50 million (RM152.1 million) for the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario, when a reporter asked, “I was going to ask you to explain quantum computing, but when do you expect Canada’s ISIL mission to begin again, and are we not doing anything in the interim while we prepare?”
Trudeau dodged the ISIL question by answering the reporter’s query on quantum computing instead, giving a clear and simple explanation on how quantum computing differ from conventional binary computing.
He jokingly told the audience, “Don’t interrupt me. When you walk out of here, you will know more, no, some of you will know far less about quantum computing, but most of you… normal computers work — either there’s power going through a wire or there’s not — it’s 1 or 0, (it’s a) binary system.”
“What quantum states allow for is much more complex information to be encoded into a single bit. A regular computer bit is either a 1 or a 0, on or off,” he told the crowd of media reporters and spectators, some of whom are theoretical physicists.
“A quantum state can be much more complex than that, because as we know, things can be both particle and wave at the same time, and the uncertainty around quantum states allows us to encode more information into a much smaller computer,” he added as the audience gave him a standing ovation, according to ABC News.
“Don’t get me going on this or we’ll be here all day, trust me,” he joked.
The video has since gone viral, netting close to 5 million views and Twittersphere is in awe, as former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd posting, “This is terrific. Worth watching Justin Trudeau out-nerd the nerds.”

What's exciting about quantum computing? the possibility that one day @JustinTrudeau could be PM in multiple states at once #Trudeau
