LONDON, June 23 — An assorted case of 1999 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Burgundy sold for £25,850 (RM141,625) at a Sotheby’s wine auction in London, making it top lot in a sale also dominated by Bordeaux Pomerol producer Chateau Petrus.
The 1999 DRC assortment was bought by a European private buyer, while a UK trade purchaser spent £9,165 on three bottles of La Tache 1990 DRC from a neighboring Vosne-Romanee vineyard in Burgundy’s Cote de Nuits region.
The sale came as collectors have been focusing on older vintages amid declines in prices for recent top Bordeaux wines. The Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 Index of leading Bordeaux producers is heading for a 10th straight month of declines.
The Romanee-Conti lot highlighted “the enduring appeal of great Burgundy,” Stephen Mould, European head of the wine department at Sotheby’s, said in an e-mailed statement, noting also that “mature vintages of Bordeaux were in demand.”
Two six-bottle lots of Petrus 2000 each fetched 14,688 pounds, while three cases of Petrus 1994 sold for £13,513 each, according to Sotheby’s.
Five bottles of Chateau Latour 1961, a first-growth producer in Bordeaux’s 1855 left-bank classification, sold for £9,400 while a 4.5 litRe jeroboam of Petrus 1975 fetched £7,285, Sotheby’s said.
The auction on June 18 totaled £813,000, with 90.1 per cent sold by lot and 93.1 percent by value. — Bloomberg
