PETALING JAYA, Oct 19 — If you're around the Petaling Jaya Old Town area, give the newly opened Sulaiman Corner a try. This no frills place is just a neighbourhood joint that is frequented by those who work nearby.

It's a simple set-up where they have taken over the garden of a single storey corner house. As it's covered with a zinc roof, it's nice and airy which makes it pleasant to dine there.

There's just a small banner outside that you may miss even though it faces Jalan Selangor. In fact, I only spotted it when I went to the petrol station located opposite it.

In the morning, there's roti and fried noodles. They also offer nasi lemak bungkus and various kuih from other vendors. Apparently they set this place up after the lockdown. Previously, the owners operated a roti canai stall in the Kuchai Lama area.

Their roti canai (RM1.30) is decent fare. It's not the lightest flatbread but I enjoyed the toasted exterior, especially when eaten hot from the griddle.

What I really like is their roti sardin (RM5). It resembles a stuffed crepe as they slice it in quarters that are then stacked up. Layers of thin, stretched dough are filled with chopped onions, egg and canned sardine. Pair it with the curry it is served with for a satisfying breakfast.

The nasi lemak bungkus is nice too, and the sambal is not overly spicy. The packet rice is served with a piece of hard boiled egg and ikan bilis for RM1.60.

Select from various dishes at the counter like chicken curry, mutton curry, fish curry and fried chicken.

From 11.30am, they switch to lunch fare which is a small selection of nasi kandar dishes with rice. On Friday, they serve biryani rice.

The biryani rice is pumped up with flavour with the liberal use of fried onions. The grains are coloured yellow and there's also a hint of spices. Enjoy the rice with a selection of their dishes.

There's ayam bawang or what they also call their ayam madu. It's thankfully not sweet but with a nice thickish sauce enhanced with fried shallots and cashew nuts. The chicken may not be the largest in terms of size but it was tasty fare so I wouldn't mind having a second piece.

In the morning, grab a packet of 'nasi lemak' where the rice is paired with a not too spicy 'sambal' (left). Ask for your 'roti canai' to be 'garing' or crispy to be paired with a creamy dhal, curry and 'sambal' (right).

I was greedy and also ordered their mutton curry which was good too with chunks of meat and potatoes. Other selections at the counter included fried chicken, fried fish, fish curry, and chicken curry.

Select the refreshing acar with chopped cucumber, carrot, onions and pineapples, or stir fried long beans for your vegetables.

The biryani rice is RM11 with chicken. If you take it with the fried fish, it's RM9. You also get a whole hard boiled egg and can help yourself to a piece of pappadum from the container.
