SAO PAULO, March 2 — A raging fire destroyed at least 50 homes in a Sao Paulo favela yesterday.
Brazilian television aired aerial images of the fire burning through the Paraisopolis slum and smoke billowing over the neighbourhood. One image showed a resident on a rooftop trying to battle the blaze with water from a small hose.

According to authorities, the fire began around 1500 local time (1800gmt). The cause is under investigation.
Dozens of firefighters arrived on the scene and eventually managed to bring the fire under control. Authorities reported that one person required medical attention due to smoke inhalation. — Reuters
