KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — National discus thrower Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin has renewed the national record with a throw of 61.10 metres at the Hallesch Werfertage in Halle, Germany late last night.

Muhammad Irfan who also won the bronze medal, erased the national record of 59.29m he set in June last year at the Slovak Clubs Samorin Championships in Slovakia.

The 22-year-old athlete set the record in his fourth attempt at the championships.

The gold medal in the event was won by Clemens Prufer of SC Potdams, Germany, with a throw of 62.29m while Torben Brandt (62.09m) of Magdeburg Sports Club, Germany won the silver.

The success will be a big boost to the athlete from Negeri Sembilan to defend his gold medal at Kuala Lumpur SEA Games scheduled from Aug 19 to 30.

In the Singapore SEA Games two years ago, he won the gold medal with a throw of 56.62m. — Bernama
