PETALING JAYA, Nov 5 — Former doubles player Cheah Soon Kit revealed he is mulling an the offer by BA of Malaysia (BAM) to be the men’s doubles coach.
BAM had in their council meeting yesterday confirmed they approached the 1992 Thomas Cup winner to replace Tan Kim Her who joined BA of India in July.
“I am interested. I have met (technical director) Morten Frost.
“I am still passionate about the sport and returning to BAM has crossed my mind,” said Cheah, who resigned from BAM after a six-year stint in 2007 to join Kuala Lumpur Racquet Club.
Cheah had played a pivotal part in guiding Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty to the women’s doubles gold medals at the 2005 Manila SEA Games and 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
BAM hope he would be able to work his magic again.
The association’s acting president Tan Sri Mohamed Al-Amin Abdul Majid, who is standing in for Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff, said Cheah was Frost’s first choice.
“We believe his experience and guidance can elevate the performance of the national team,” said Al-Amin.
As a player, the 47-year-old Cheah formed a deadly partnership with Soo Beng Kiang and Yap Kim Hock and won 20 career titles, including the Thomas Cup and silver medals at the 1996 Olympic Games and 1997 world championships.
Cheah, who also had a stint as a singles coach with the Looi Badminton Academy currently runs an online business.
