SEPANG, Sept 2 — After failing to clinch the world champion title for the first time in Copenhagen on Sunday, Malaysian badminton superstar Datuk Lee Chong Wei has put the loss behind him and is now turning his sights on the Asian Games which kicks off in Incheon, South Korea on September 19.
“The Asian Games is just two weeks away. I have to prepare and I hope I can be mentally ready for it.
“I have not fully recovered mentally (after Copenhagen) and I hope I can get down to training for the Asian Games without delay,” he told reporters on arrival from Copenhagen at the KL International Airport here tonight.
According to Chong Wei, the Asian Games would be tougher for him because of the cast and more so since it is held once every four years.
“The Chinese, Korean and Indonesian shuttlers will be out in full force. So I will have to fortify my mental strength further,” he said.
Touching on the Badminton World Championship which concluded in Copenhagen Sunday, Chong Wei said he did his very best although failing to win the title.
“Maybe I can try again next year because it is an annual meet... but I am not sure yet (whether he will have another go). My focus now is the Asian Games.
“During the World Championship, I was not 100 per cent ready but still made it to the final. It is good enough for me. I was just one step away to achieve victory but I failed again,” he said.
Chong Wei lost 19-21, 19-21 to Chen Long of China in the final held at the Ballerup Super Arena, Copenhagen.
Chong Wei has not failed to make the final of the World Championship since 2012 but has not won the title yet. — Bernama
