LOS ANGELES, Jan 18 — Cloaked in secrecy, JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures have released a trailer for the long-awaited Cloverfield sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Previously titled Valencia, 10 Cloverfield Lane, stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. According to Variety, the film was made under the working title Valencia, presumably to hide the fact that it was a Cloverfield sequel, meaning that even some of the crew members may not have known.
Abrams has since confirmed that the film, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, is set in the same universe as his 2008 monster movie Cloverfield.
“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield,” Abrams told Collider. “The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
The film follows a young woman, played by Winstead, who wakes up in a stranger’s basement after a car accident. The man (Goodman) tells her that he’s saved her life from an attack that has left the outside world uninhabitable.
“Don’t open that door — you’re going to get all of us killed!” Goodman’s character exclaims in the trailer when Winstead tries to flee.
It’s still pretty unclear whether the film is a sequel or a prequel, but 10 Cloverfield Lane is set for US release on March 11.
