KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — Over two in 10, or 23 per cent, of new hires in “big companies” with 200 to 500 employees would leave within the first six months, according to a survey by recruitment firm Employment Hero.

The “State of Recruitment” report it released today also found that 36 per cent of respondents said they were likely to lose between 21 to 50 per cent of their new hires within six months.

“The Construction and Hospitality sectors have the highest new hire turnover at 22 per cent and 21 per cent respectively, while the Manufacturing and Agriculture sectors had the lowest rate of new hire turnover at 16 per cent,” the report stated.

Employment Hero suggested that high turnover rates may be due to the company's fault for not vetting candidates properly or for not providing adequate onboarding and training.

New talent might also be discouraged by the company's culture and lack of alignment with what they seek, it suggested.

Job descriptions may be the reason why there is dissonance between job seekers and hiring managers.

“When there's a talent crunch, managers, they get a bit desperate,” said Kevin Fitzgerald, its managing director of Asia, commenting on a mismatch of expectations all the way through the process.

Employment Hero describes itself as a human resource, payroll and recruitment solution designed for Malaysian businesses.

The report the firm released was aimed at highlighting the disparity between MNCs and SMEs in the hiring process and the costs incurred when hiring.

The survey involved 515 business leaders in Singapore and Malaysia between June 9 and 12 this year, through the Glow consumer research platform.
