SEREMBAN, Sept 14 — The act of spreading slander to create a negative perception of the government and its leaders must never be condoned, Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Eddin Syazlee Shith said.

He said this was because slander could threaten national security and unity.

“We are in an era of information technology, without borders. We do not deny the influence of social media as the main medium to disseminate information on the government’s policies and agendas, and a link between the people and leaders.

“However, each citizen need to equip themselves with knowledge, exercise prudence and go by ethics when using social media,” he said in his speech at the launch of the “MyMerdeka Sayangi Malaysiaku: Malaysia Bersih 2019” here today.

His speech was read out by Negri Sembilan State Unity, Information and National Integration committee chairman Choo Ken Hwa.

In addition, Eddin Syazlee said the responsibility of preserving the well-being of the country is a collective one, and not just the task of an agency or department.

About the event, he said the programme is seen as a platform to convey the new government’s policies and information more clearly, with a positive impact on the community.
