KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — The operator of Raj’s Banana Leaf has blamed new recruits over a video of the restaurant’s employees using water puddled beside a drain to clean dishes.

The video was shared repeatedly online and caused a controversy that has drawn the attention of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and health inspectors who are expected to visit the eatery today.

Raj’s Banana Leaf insisted that the incident was isolated and not standard practice, in an apology posted on Facebook.

“This has never happened before, and should not have happened. We also want to assure you that Raj’s Banana Leaf consistently passes the health inspections conducted regularly.

“We are very sorry by [sic] the regrettable actions by our new staffs and understand that this is not acceptable,” the operator wrote.

Most users on Facebook were unconvinced, however, and accused the restaurant operator of scapegoating the cleaning staff.

Many also called for the restaurant to be shut down.

Raj’s Banana Leaf later offered to host patrons for a free “buka puasa” dinner tomorrow evening, in a bid to salvage some goodwill, but users also appeared to snub the offer on Facebook.
