KULIM, May 29 — A 14-year-old girl and her father were found drowned this morning in flash floods that have inundated the district since last week.

The body of Nor Suri Danila Johari was found suspended on a tree near a river about three kilometres from her house at Kampung Baru Tambahan Seberang near Sungai Kob here at 8.40am while that of Johari  Bakar,  57, was recovered at 10am, about 1.5 kilometres from their house.

In the incident around midnight, Johari and Nor Suri Danila were swept away by strong currents while they were trying to evacuate.

Johari’s wife Che Yam Ton, 55, who managed to save herself and subsequently rescued by villagers at about 3am said the water began to rise at her house around 11pm due to heavy rain.

“At that time, the water was chest deep and we moved outside to the platform on the car garage. However, less than five minutes, the garage was submerged in flood water and we were swept away by strong currents,” she said when met at the Forensic Unit of Kulim Hospital.

Che Yam said she managed to cling to a tree and hold Nor Suri Danila while her son Azim Hazrin, 21, clung to one of the garage pillars.

However, she said she lost her grip on her daughter after hitting a motorcycle and could only hear Nor Suri Danila screaming her brother’s name.

Johari and Nor Suri Danila’s remains were sent to Kulim Hospital and will be buried at the Masjid Sungai Kob Muslim cemetery after the post-mortem.

Meanwhile, Kulim district police chief Supt Nasir Jaafar confirmed the incident when contacted by Bernama. — Bernama
