KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 ― A few hundred people marched through a police barrier in front of Parliament to protest against the tabling of the Election Commission’s (EC) redelineation report today.
The protesters led by several Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders, including PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, were stopped by another police barricade made up of Light Strike Force officers near the Parliament building bridge.
A group of 10 representatives were then allowed entry into Parliament for the memorandum submission, while the remainder held a sit-in protest outside the bridge around 11.40am.
Earlier the police said the police would only allow 10 representatives to submit their memorandum, reminding participants to stay put at the National Monument.
During a speech at the National Monument, PH chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told the crowd that the reason they gathered today was because Malaysians have lost hope in the nation’s democracy.
“This country is now a kleptocracy country and they will oppress the people in whatever way possible.
“Be brave in marking PH when casting your ballots while rejecting the moon and weighing scale. Don’t be scared if you are threatened,” he said, referring to the logos of PAS and Barisan Nasional (BN).
Today’s rally, organised by electoral reform group Bersih 2.0, aims to hand over a memorandum of protest to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.
The memorandum outlined Bersih’s demand on why Najib should scrap the government’s motion seeking approval for its redelineation exercise.
