PETALING JAYA, Jan 12 ― Some 377 Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) users have been using concession cards meant for the students, elderly and disabled in order to enjoy the 50 per cent discounted rates.

The Star reported that during random inspections carried out by operator Rapid KL at LRT and MRT stations, the culprits were found carrying cards belonging to family members.

Concession cards are available in three categories: students (primary and secondary school, college and university), senior citizens (aged 60 and above) and disabled citizens.

In the news report, an official from Rapid KL said of those nabbed, 246 or 65.3 per cent were using cards meant for students, 112 or 29.7 per cent used cards meant for the elderly and 19 of 5 per cent were using cards for the disabled.

“Those caught were taking advantage of the discount accorded to the card holders, who were related to those caught typically children, spouses or siblings.”

A ride from Sungai Buloh MRT station to Kampung Selamat would cost the typical rider RM1.20 but only RM0.60 for a card holder, while a ride from Sungai Buloh would cost only RM 3.20 from the usual RM6.20.

The official explained that those caught had their cards confiscated, while the card holders would be blacklisted and no longer allowed to apply for the cards.

He also urged the public to come forward with information on those abusing the concession cards by contacting Rapid KL at 03-7882585.
