PETALING JAYA, June 22 — An elderly security guard at a condominium here was sentenced to 20 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today for causing injury to a man using a glass bottle last week.
Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir handed down the sentence on Y. Gunasekaran, 62, after he pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to M. K. Muniandy, 46, by using a glass bottle as a weapon which could cause death or severe injury.
He committed the offence at the Crimson Condominium guard house, Jalan PJU 1A/41, Kelana Jaya, here, at 7am on June 16.
He was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or with a fine or whipping or any two of such punishments upon conviction.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Fazeedah Faik pressed for a deterrent sentence as a lesson to the accused who, as a security guard should not have behaved in such a manner.
In mitigation, the accused who was unrepresented, however, appealed for a light sentence on the grounds that he was the sole breadwinner for his family. — Bernama
