KUCHING, June 16 — The High Court here has fixed 9am tomorrow to deliver its ruling on the Originating Summons filed by DAP's Dr Ting Tiong Choon challenging the Sarawak state legislative assembly for disqualifying him as the state assemblyman for Pujut.

State Deputy Attorney-General Saferi Ali said today that judge Datuk Douglas Primus Sikayun decided to deliver his ruling early, instead of June 19 as originally fixed, due to the urgency of the case.

"That was what the judge said (in court)," he told Malay Mail Online, referring to June 20 as nomination day for the by-election and July 4 as polling date.

Counsels representing Dr Ting and the respondents completed their two-day submissions on the Originating Summons today.

The State Attorney-General Talat Mahmood Abdul Rashid and Saferi are representing the Sarawak state legislative while Speaker Datuk Amar Asfia Awang Nasar is represented by Shankar Ram Asnani. International Trade and E-Commerce Minister Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh is represented by Grace Lee and Election Commission by Azizan Arshad.

The court struck off the Sarawak state government as a respondent in the suit.

Dr Ting is represented by a team of lawyers led by Chong Siew Chiang.

Dr Ting, who was stripped of the position as Pujut state lawmaker on May 12, has named the five as respondents in his Originating Summons.

In his summons, he wants the court to declare that his disqualification from holding the Pujut seat by the Sarawak state assembly was null and void and that he is still the state assemblyman representing Pujut.

The State assembly stripped him of its membership representing Pujut after a motion, tabled by Wong, was supported by 70 Barisan Nasional state assemblymen, but was rejected by 10 from the opposition.

Wong had said Dr Ting had voluntarily acquired an Australian citizenship in 2010, contravening Article 17(1)((g) of the State Constitution.

However, the former Pujut assemblyman renounced his Australian citizenship just before the state elections last year.

In the contest for Pujut, he defeated Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Hii King Chiong and two other candidates.
