KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — A motorist who ended up with a neck brace after he was beaten up by a mob angered at his honking during Friday prayers outside a Johor Baru surau was charged today with rioting, along with five men.
The Star Online reported that the victim, 28-year-old Toh Chai Eun, of the May 5 mob attack in Taman Austin Perdana; sailor Hazlan Masahat, 55; factory operator Muhamad Akhmarul Naim Amir, 22; Rela members Nor Haszman Hashim, 46, Robert Bajak, 36; and Norfriandika Kusuma Irfandi, 22, were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code that criminalises rioting with maximum two years’ jail, or a fine, or both.
The Johor Baru magistrate’s court fixed bail at RM1,000 and set July 17 for case mention.
All six men were reportedly charged separately. They were unrepresented.
Toh had repeatedly honked his car horn outside the surau during the obligatory prayers for Muslims in the May 5 incident as his car was blocked by vehicles parked on both sides of the road, angering a group of worshipers who then beat him up and damaged his car.
Toh later apologised. The young man was reported to be wearing a neck brace after suffering injuries in the assault that affected his movement and speech.
