GEORGE TOWN, June 15 — The investigation papers on the case involving a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer suspected of asking for a bribe from a police officer in Penang had been sent to the deputy public prosecutor yesterday for further action.

Penang police chief, Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said they had completed the investigation and were waiting for further instruction from the DPP whether the 38-year-old officer would be charged in court.

“The remand order on the officer who is attached to the MACC Putrajaya North Zone Intelligence Unit expired today and he has been released on police bail,” he said when contacted here today.

Last Friday, the officer was arrested in a restaurant in Taman Machang Bubok, here, at 10.20pm after allegedly receiving extortion money of RM3,000 from a police officer and was remanded for five days to facilitate  the investigation.

Police also seized his authority card, backpack, two 9mm bullet casings, a mobile phone and a Volkswagen car from the MACC officer.

Chuah said based on the investigation, the MACC officer was believed to be involved in extorting money from a number of police officers in Penang for the last two years.

Meanwhile, he said the Penang police contingent would continue its fight against gambling in the state, with integrated operations at family entertainment centres that abused their licence and illegal gambling dens.

“From January to June this year, 211 illegal gambling outlets were inspected, with 325 people arrested including employees and customers. During the same period, we also seized 703 gambling machines, simulators and laptops used for gambling,” he said.

On Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi ordered Penang police to fight illegal gambling activities all out, which he described as becoming more serious in the state. — Bernama
