KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar told Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown today to assist local investigations into her allegations, but refused to promise her immunity.
The Inspector-General of Police insisted, however, that Rewcastle-Brown should make an effort to provide evidence here to support the accusations against various lawmakers on her website.
“I will not. I will not guarantee her safe passage,” he told reporters today.
“Well you come out to accuse people of this and that, this is like you are beating someone and then hiding your hands behind. If you are really sincere, come and prove whatever allegations,” Khalid added.
The IGP added that at least 40 police reports were lodged against Sarawak Report over a recent article.
He said Malaysian police were aware of the allegations made on Sarawak Report, but explained that these were considered hearsay unless Rewcastle-Brown was prepared to provide evidence.
Khalid then accused Rewcastle-Brown of intending to smear him and his police force.
Last week, The Malaysian Insight news portal reported that Khalid invited Rewcastle-Brown to aid investigations into a Sarawak Report article claiming that millions of ringgit were channelled to a prominent lawyer linked to Umno.
